I assume I have too. I only use bash_profile.

a good approximation seems to be that .bash_profile runs in a new login (new terminal, new ssh session) and .bashrc also runs in subshells

.bashrc is for every new instance of bash and .bash_profile only gets sourced on login. I honestly don't know, but that's mental model. Is that correct at all?
