i have now tried writing to this SD card with dd from two devices, and no matter what I do it doesn’t erase/replace what’s on it??? i am so confused no read-only errors, just… writes disappear

it is NOT THE ADAPTER. I have an SD card on which writes succeed and disappear. nice. computers are great.

TIL this MAY be a designed-in failure mode of SD cards — after a certain error threshold, they discard new writes to preserve any extant data

that sounds like one of the “standard” hacks makers of fake sd cards use. the other one is a ring buffer so you only preserve the last-written data.

I think it just wore out, been in use in this always-on Pi for… five years or so? The failure mode surprised me though!
