Read Eloquent Ruby and The Ruby Way

has ruby been ~stable since the versions these books were written on? E.g. starting with a book on python published in early 2000s might be painful due to changes even if the core content was good.

More stable than, say, python 2-3. I find with Ruby it’s like 80% “thinking like a Rubyist”, which has been pretty stable. “Eloquent Ruby” got my brain around it. “Metaprogramming Ruby 2” is a good read if you’re in a shop that does a lot of deeper meta programming.
