The abbreviation in this case is Mc for Mac (mac is Gaelic for "son" so it's the same principle as Johnson or whatever) I guess Mac names don't superscript then? Does someone want to confirm this?

I do know that some people also use Nic or Nc (short for nighean, "daughter") instead of Mac/Mc, in case you've ever seen that!

My family never wrote the underline that I know, but it does have historical precedent! I believe the underline is to indicate that it's an abbreviation (like you might use an apostrophe now), it's still preserved in № as well! https://english.stackexchange.com/questions/334927/moving-the-lower-case-c-up-above-type-in-the-last-name-mcneil …https://twitter.com/shessomickey/status/1204546392267599872 …

Yesssss! One of the libraries I used to belong to (in a pretty Scottish settler area of Canada, let's be clear) had the Mc/Mac alphabetized separately from all other surnames in M when I'd go pick up my books on holdhttps://twitter.com/TiaRachel/status/1204546660598194176 …

Why is this superscript/superior Scottish c not in Unicode, seriously (Or is it and I just haven't noticed)

I find it really interesting that people get the last couple letters of my name wrong about 35% of the time but barely ever get the Mc/Mac thing wrong, I guess it's either something they know to check or it's supported by spellcheckhttps://twitter.com/k_loulee/status/1204548250184736768 …

When I did some Scots Gaelic lessons as a kid (as you do, I guess), they re-gaelicized my name for the class something like Nic Cuilleach, which was a neat experience although evidently I didn't actually change my legal namehttps://twitter.com/artbyailbhe/status/1204549809484582915 …

Yeah, I've seen a few places mention this apostrophe option as well, although never actually known anyone who used it!https://twitter.com/k_loulee/status/1204548250184736768 …

I mean, I think the first c is supposed to be lowercase, right? So the Unicode superscript minuscule 'c' should be accurate? I agree that it looks a tad small in MᶜCulloch though https://twitter.com/adrienneleigh/status/1204549125355773958 …
