How late do you think it's acceptable to keep a retail employee at work on Christmas Eve?

This subject makes me sad. Can I tell a story about the Good Old Days, by which I mean the mid-1980s?

You absolutely can. It makes me sad too. For what it's worth - this doesn't have to do with my own job personally.

Okay so in the mid-80s my father had a clothing store in the mall in Belleville. On Xmas Eve, there'd be a little party in the back room with beer and wine -- former employees would come in to visit on their way home to see their family, friends would stop in.

This would start at, oh, 3pm or so. One person would watch the front. A couple shoppers would stop in for last-minute gifts. Maybe they'd have a glass of wine too. A COUPLE OF PEOPLE. AT 3PM. They'd probably close the store by 4:30, go home at 6 or so!

Even now I have a hard time picturing a nearly-vacant mall on Xmas Eve, party in the back room, stores closing early so people could go home. So weird.

I love this story. It reminds me of working at the local public library in my small town when I was a teen and in my early twenties. I would actually love working on Christmas Eve, we closed early (1pm IIRC) and it was always such a fun environment.

Mind you this was the late 2000s and not the 80s haha and I don't recall us having wine :p just tons of chocolate. But still.

That was usually reserved for the staff Christmas party haha. Another relic that seems to be rare nowadays. I work remotely now but we still all get on video chat to have our Christmas party and I am thankful for that!

With wine, I hope! :D Our holiday party is in January, which is convenient schedule-wise but kind of lands in the holiday aftershock
