you can’t find them anywhere now, it turns out. not even those mass-produced kids’ watches with a tiny digital face in a cartoon character band. you can still buy an *expensive*, designer watch, of course… but cheap digital watches seem to have utterly vanished

ok research results: Walmart seems to be the correct answer if you still want a $10 made in China watch. for a bit more you can get analog watches at sports / hiking stores still (i finally found one at REI!)

conclusion of the saga: i have, hilariously, acquired The Gothest Watch. apparently one of the last reservoirs of Watch People is some kind of military / tactical / survivalist vibe so hi yes this watch is matte black with dark gray hands and numbers
