Wax paper and parchment paper are different because the wax in wax paper is flammable/meltable so it's strongly disadvised to go in the oven, whereas parchment paper is still good at hot temperatures!https://twitter.com/mycrofette/status/1196228268422320128 …

now I'm curious if it's different from "wax paper". It probably is, but english is my second language so I've been using them interchangeably and still managed to make myself understood

Wonderful! I'd really love to see your kind of treatment of it! And possibly sorting out the whole history of waxed/greaseproof/other kinds of baking papers!https://twitter.com/ShortFormErnie/status/1196229188967116802 …

Greaseproof paper, at least according to Wikipedia, needs to be greased in order to be effective at being nonstick for baking, whereas parchment paper is already nonstick (though sometimes people use a bit of butter to hold it in place)https://twitter.com/marsdeat/status/1196229146034233344 …

I actually did not know there was a difference between the two... In general, I'd call them both "greaseproof paper".

Apparently the reason that parchment paper has the same name as the Egyptian kind of parchment is that they're made in similar ways! However, if you're somewhat distracted, this featured snippet really makes it seem like the Ptolemaic Dynasty was cooking their fish en papillotepic.twitter.com/4uKXUhN52c

Search: when was parchment paper for baking invented
Snippet: Parchment, which is made in a similar way to baking paper, was first invented in the Ptolemaic Dynasty, in Egypt, during 305 to 283 BC. Baking paper is heat resistant, and generally a partially transparent white colour.

Yeah, so I think there are two questions, 1) when parchment paper was invented and 2) when it started displacing other kinds of baking paper (presumably as it got cheaper?)https://twitter.com/EllenFremedon/status/1196228613219258368 …

I don't recall seeing it in recipe books until the 90s or using it until the 2000s, but recipes from the first half of the 20th century often mention butcher's paper, and Eliza Acton, circa 1850, tells you to use a sheet of writing paper.

This is an interesting citation for invention! I'm not sure I've ever touched real parchment so it's interesting to learn that it has such similar properties to the baking kind!https://twitter.com/Viburnu82435131/status/1196232266223144960 …

Yeah, it's interesting to me that many "early" citations seem to talk about it as a thing that of course people already know!https://twitter.com/naogannet/status/1196231793936084992 …

I first heard of it in the 90s or late 80s, but the people discussing it on Usenet were talking about it in the context of using it as a quilt piecing aid, and spoke of it as do people who’ve known a thing for a while.

I think it was kinda around but not as ubiquitous, maybe just more expensive so we only used it very occasionally Is this, like, a baking show effect? I feel like fancy baking people use parchment paper to line everythinghttps://twitter.com/feurison/status/1196233319358312448 …

I didn't know it was a more recent thing, I was born in the 90s in Europe and it has always been around for me. Interesting, unlike the 🇬🇧 Wikipedia, the 🇩🇪Wikipedia article has a short history section. "Already the Romans were using paper for baking" Sadly nothing on modern use

(But I'm not sure how much of not using it much as a kid was just my family, as there are other people in the replies saying they remember it from the 1970s or 1960s)
