Great question! Director to SRE IC. Has gone really well, I much prefer being a small-l leader to manager and being hands-on. I miss access to the conversations at mgr level and access to C-levels, and to some extent having to influence rather than decide. 1/

Yeah, I keep finding myself in the critical path of very specialized ops areas, so seems like something to consider! I hear you re: age discrimination. Not that it's the right answer, but I'm comforted by the fact that you can always "go back" to management, right?

I mean, _technically_ yes, but I don't think I'm suited for it. I haven't figured out the "last third of my career" thing, to be honest. (Another thing I feel calling me is a desire to not live in a big city any more, so it'll be the double challenge of "older and remote".)
