They were strange days—curious dream-like days—and they followed each other silently, like shadows over grain fields. Edith Allonby, The Fulfilment, 1905.

Some of the Dutch theosophical publications had especially striking cover designs, such as this Dutch translation of Besant’s ‘Esoteric Christianity’, published in 1904.

The Dutch theosophists published some of the most beautiful editions such as this 1903 Dutch translation of ‘Man, Visible and Invisible’ In two volumes. The second volume actually is a cassette containing loose cardboard leaves with the thoughtforms printed on them:

For years this leatherbound copy in three volumes (this is one of the set) of Blavatsky’s ‘Secret Doctrine’ puzzled me to no end. But recently I discovered it’s the first American edition. I bought them years ago. Theosophy was very prolific in the Netherlands until WWII.

What I have found: 1. Occultus was also the name of a talking wax head shown in London and Paris 1909-1914. 2. In an article from 1911 the Berlin inventor is called Otto Widemann. 3. Occultus gets a mention in a 1928 article about the Metropolis robot.

Looking into it. And for some reason I just found another robot called Sabor, that handed flowers to our queen Juliana in 1955! 😉 According to the caption it speaks Dutch as well... 🤔

Jean-Jacques Lequeu’s drawings now are packed with details on how his fantastic architecture would actually work, such as this 1804-11 temple for initiation into a secret society
