What has happened with the man detained and physically abused by some protesters at the Hong Kong airport is appalling and must stop now. But he works for The Global Times, a propaganda arm of the Chinese state, and he is not a journalist and should not be called that.

There is zero excuse for violence. I am just trying to explain why some protesters are furious at the man. The Global Times is Chinese state propaganda and for weeks it has primed its readers such that if troops kill protesters in Hong Kong, mainland Chinese would not care.

All I mean is that under no circumstances should this beating be considered an attack on the press. It is an attack by a mob on a human being and that’s really bad. But in this era of fake news calling the victim a reporter is a real disservice to those really covering the story.

To get a balanced picture of the Hong Kong protests it has been necessary to look at both Chinese and western media.

Like you, after all. Another tool. The news about you being a journalist have been greatly exaggerated 😉

How about researchers works for DC think tank fund by State Department or DOD contractors? Are they part of academics or US foreign policy influencer? The decline of public faith in established institution is stagerring, as in HK and everywhere, EU or US
