Lookit is an experiment platform that allows researchers to design webcam-based research studies, which families can participate in from their home computers, rather than coming to a lab. We have researchers from over 50 institutions building and running studies!

Structurally, this position lives inside a lab at MIT. In practice, you'd be the 3rd full-time member of a mostly autonomous group, joining another developer and myself. Open source code, documentation, and planned features are available via github.com/lookit/.

The position holds primary responsibility for the Ember.js experiment runner, which researchers use to specify study protocols. You'll also work with researchers on feature requests and PRs, and should enjoy collaborating with people w/ all kinds of different tech backgrounds.

User engagement and UX/UI design will be critical for this role - in addition to grad students and other academic researchers, your ability to work and empathize with caregivers and families of all kinds is vital!

Culture: NOT a breakneck 'startup' environment. More interested in a sustainable pace and accountability to the goals we set than in impressing each other with long workdays. We have lives and responsibilities outside of work, and we know that you do too.

Q: What's the salary?
A: The salary range is 100K-115K. Lookit is a free-to-use OS project running out of a lab at MIT - we understand this is below for-profit industry rates, but hope the job will be a good fit for a skilled engineer interested in a nonprofit-type environment.

Q: I'm about to graduate (or, I have volunteer but not paid software dev experience), can I apply?
A: Sure! In this case, cover letter should explain why you'd be effective in the role, e.g. to learn new frameworks, deliver on a deadline, work effectively with teammates & users

Q: Can I work remotely?
A: Yes - though you must be located & legally able to work in the United States and okay with an EST(ish) work schedule.
Two of the team are fully remote, and I am local, WFH 2-3 days a week. There's also a solo office in the lab at MIT set for this role.
