Vitamin k is necessary for things like blood clotting and the binding of calcium. Deficiencies can result in lack of proper blood clotting, which would cause excessive bleeding. It is more common in breastfed infants, so they may give the shot in case that is the plan.

Vit K levels reach normal levels at the 8th day. Also the liver of a newborn is not fully funtional for up to 7 days after birth, which makes it more difficult to process.
