Isn’t a lot of this going to depend on how good the AMP tools are in Constant Contact, mailchimp et al? If it bumps conversions for Gmail and other ESPs, won’t everyone get on board? Disclaimer: I barely understand this at best.

That's exactly the point I'm trying to make. ESPs are the sending platforms (i.e. Constant Contact and MailChimp). Not the same as Gmail.

I totally agree with this sentiment. With how email clients have “adopted” standards in the past we could have fragmented AMP rendering just the same as HTML rendering.
