Coding bootcamps can be great. But they're mostly good at getting majority men into tech. Less so at getting black women into tech, regardless of their abilities. This isn't just the bootcamp's fault. Hiring in tech is broken. Black women score better with blind assessments.

I talk about my privileges and advantages a lot. Yeah I'm a giant black dude, and I experience racism daily. But consider this: How many black folk do you know in tech? Now drop out all the "Ivy League Nigerians(tm)." How many do you know now?

If us fancy Africans applied to your tech job with a fake resume, saying that we were self-taught or bootcamp grads, and without known, majority folk to vouch for us (AKA, internal referrals), would we still pass your interview? Are you sure? How sure? How do you ensure that?

This is what I think it can look like when we get the "self taught" thing right: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=moUKvLeGtgM … Caveat: Angela is amazingly humble. It is fantastically difficult to self-medicate a software education to Google SWE level. Yes, it takes a very long time.

To what extent is "self-taught" also socioeconomic? Many self-taught tech people I know learned 20 years ago as teenagers, which required access to a computer and someone who could point them to educational resources.

My theory is that what we learned back then is not what we think. We weren't learning tactical skills, but general problem solving: perseverance in the face of uncooperative machines, figuring stuff out. That can also be learned by building RC cars, sewing clothes, or knitting.

Being self taught is not enough if you're a POC. I was self taught, was doing grad school level stuff at 15, but I couldn't get a job until I got a master's degree that added no new skills.
-
Being self taught and not certified is a dying breed. Mainly because the gatekeepers filtering and using AI to find candidates. I'm self taught. Have 25 years practical experience as a Systems Administrator, have applied for hundreds of jobs I qualify for since January, no luck.

80% of the reason why I got a PhD was because I knew having a credential would give me credibility that my appearance doesn't always get me. I imagine (based on stories I hear) that this holds extra true for people who aren't white-passing. No one talks about it tho...

My PhD letter (not the actual diploma) hangs at my desk for this reason.
