Leaders don't need to know everything. But they need to know what they don't know. There are literally hundreds of underfunded, under-resourced, non-profits that have been addressing the issue of black education access since before Buttigieg realized that he needs black voters.

And yes it is "access" and no it's not an "achievement gap." One view frames it as a problem of the students and their families and another as a problem of our systems. It seems subtle, but it's important because it significantly alters how you think about what needs to change.

Providing every college student with a $2K interest free loan for emergencies, would increase black graduation rates more than extra mentors. Providing every high school student with $2K to spend on SAT prep and materials, would increase black SAT scores more than role models.

Funding organizations proximate to the issues faced by black and brown communities across the nation, will have a greater impact than trying to solve the problem with limited context. And we haven't even touched on the systemic racism that creates these financial challenges.
