These groups go to great lengths to verify the statistics of the averaging process. Here's what the Berkeley Earth group reports as the uncertainty in the global temperature average vs time. As recording stations were added during the 20th century, uncertainty went down.

Here's using direct temperature measurements. Since there's some art in computing the global average from thousands of temperature records, the chart shows the results of SIX independent groups. The gray shading is the 95% confidence interval for the Berkeley Earth data.

About to board world's largest passenger aircraft. Still convinced heavier-than-air flight is impossible. Magic only viable explanation.

I've completed "Crossed Wires" - Day 3 - Advent of Code 2019 Naive/brute force solution (O(n^2) in this case) still sufficient.

I still think 'no'. There's fair argument for it being in a different class than the 8 planets.

Here's Derek from Veritasium explaining the same thing: where do trees get their mass? I've been really amazed by this fact from the time I learned it many years ago! Trees are awesome!

For an explanation of why this happens (and why it's not particularly profound, despite being beautiful and leading to more profound things), check out 's fantastic video (as usual!) about it:

1/ Hey, , someone just posted this pic & comment: "I was up at 38000’ and this thing was way above. It split up to pieces but we could easily track it for a minute or more, must have been a big guy!! It was over the Irish Sea around 21:00Z. Way cool to have seen it!!"

With the outer planets it's even worse, as they move much slower. You can barely tell the paths aren't straight. (Do note that this is only 2 years, so the outer planets complete nowhere near a full orbit ... Neptune, in dark blue, takes 160 years and goes out to 30 au).

Here's a correct-scale depiction of the inner planets' motion around the Sun + the solar system's galactic motion, spanning 2 years. As suspected, the helical paths of the planets are much more stretched out than the animation suggests.

The mass of the Greenland ice sheet, computed from gravimetric data recorded by the GRACE satellite. It's striking that the total mass lost in the last 15 years is significantly larger than the amplitude of the annual thaw/freeze cycle (which is clearly visible).
