Bottom line: we screwed up, but teachers will have to suck it up and pay the price.

I learned today that a teacher was looking into life insurance policies to provide for her husband and son should something happen due to a virus with still many unknowns. Pretty heartbreaking reality for her.

I understand the urgency and the value but cannot see how anything justifies putting children and teachers in harm’s way, the US does not have the school-based medical infrastructure or the budget to allow this to occur safely. We can reduce harm, but none of this will prevent it

And your conclusions here have been built around what you yourselves refer to as “limited emerging evidence” of age based susceptibility and infectivity studies for which you say “the evidence is weak.”

Important, thanks. The proposed threshold of <10 case/100K is interesting in light of data cited showing other countries did this at <1 case/100K and with much more stringent COVID-19 community prevention measures.

Another good point. This is not science and should not have been published in @NEJM. And what is worse is that it will be exploited politically because of where it is published. #retractthispaper

I'm sorry. I read your article. It isn't medical science. It is fantasy fiction. This does an extreme disservice to educators who aren't going to be provided with PPE & the other stuff you guys hope for. @Laurie_Garrett, not a scientist, did a better job. I recommend retraction.

This is very well written & addresses the important pts, incl results of political & social failures. Yet, as a science journalist & mom to 2 elem kids in Texas, where the state isn't taking approp measures & school decisions are yo-yoing w politics, I worry how they'll read it.

They'll see the "primary schools should be regarded essential" & ignore the "places not taking approp measures to contain high transmission face a difficult moral decision." (paraphrased) The Texas AG has already JUST said school districts don't need to follow local health orders
