It's the US and Bolsonaro-led Brazil doing this together: declaring who the "real leader" of Venezuela is, with Canada now following. Exactly as @mehdirhasan says, recognizing the dangers of this intervention doesn't mean one harbors any sympathy or affection for Maduro:https://twitter.com/mehdirhasan/status/1088143143873196032 …

I’m no expert on Venezuela but I’m pretty sure you can think Maduro is a horrible/bad/authoritarian president *and* also think it’s bad for the US to back coups or regime change there.

I'm worried about the standard this perpetuates, wherein to reject US-backed coups/regime change we need to co-sign US talking points about its targets. Especially if one is "no expert on Venezuela", why be so sure it has "a horrible/bad/authoritarian president"? Especially if

      1) This is a really bad take. 2) You don't need to be an expert on Venezuela to know Maduro is credibly accused of major human rights abuses (not just "US talking points"). 3) You can condemn regime change while criticizing the regime, just as you can walk and chew gum. Try it.

      4) I opposed the Iraq war with every fibre of my being in 2003 but I also recognized at the time that Saddam was an evil tyrant (not that Maduro is Saddam of course). 5) Are you basically saying anyone the US criticizes, I can't criticize & have to pretend is good? That's absurd.

This is about power. The US wields huge amounts of it. Because of this, it can do what it wants. When might is right and carrying out violence because you're more powerful is fascism. So if you support US you support Trump and Bolsonaro and fascism.

For all the crimes US has committed they deserve more than Venezuela to undergo regime change to remove the corrupt corporate Democrat/Republican regime and install an actual democratic government. But it won't happen, only because of power and who wields it.

Why does criticism of an illegal act by a global power have to include running commentary on the morality of the other side? Do you ask for the character certificate of a murder victim before you urge the police to investigate?
