One idea I’ve heard for supporting local businesses while not wanting to eat out or do other activities during #COVID19 social distancing: buy gift cards now, use them later

The business doesn’t actually get the $ value until the gift card is used. Idea, if you choose to go out to eat, go on off hours. Eat a late lunch, early dinner, like we did in Kemah, Texas. Few people but excellent meal & terrific service at Landry’s.

I know this idea comes from a good place, but it won’t do anything.

That only works for big chains and discriminates against smaller family owned businesses.

Not necessarily... Some small places offer gift certificates

Or maybe, just go and over-tip. Because the gift card will only benefit the corporation, not the people who are impacted by your absence. They still have bills to pay.
