Not exactly "widespread".... Krugman was probably thinking like a Nazi Germany round-up of Jews or a WW2 roundup of Japanese here in USA. 500 incidents in the big picture of things is quite minimal. Everything in life is about perspective, especially statistical analysis.

As a whole, this country wasn't really even acknowledging hate crimes existed before 9/11. Everything changed after that + folks like Dubya could have done much more to calm fears but they fucking didn't. Never forget that part.
