What does it mean to call it a "public health" problem?
1st and most importantly, it means centering our work in the human experience. The injuries, deaths, and ripple effects on communities. #ThisIsOurLanehttps://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMp1815462 …

2nd, it means using data & science - not emotion or rhetoric - to create lasting change. We did this for car crashes (without taking cars off the road.... we just made them safer). We did this for AIDS. Evangelicals (e.g., Surgeon General Koop) were among the leaders.pic.twitter.com/fBmE4tULxQ

3rd, it means FEDERAL FUNDING to do the work. Foundations & philanthropy eg
@LauraArnoldFdn@ResearchAFFIRM have been filling the void. But that's insufficient. Last year, Congress appropriated $25 million. A start, but still only a drop in the bucket of death and disabilitypic.twitter.com/XScMlZHWTC

4th, it means using FACTS. Mass shootings are horrific, terrifying, society-changing events. But ***every day*** across this country, more than 100 people die from a gunshot wound. 2/3 of those deaths are suicides. Preventing gun deaths is more than mass shootings.pic.twitter.com/dt1KSF8mBn

5th, it means following where there is evidence. For policy - RAND's great summary &
@BulletPtsProj For suicide - check out@EmmyBetz@Rsbeidas@PsychBrownBag For homicide -@StrohCunningham@EpiProfCharlie@Eugenia_South & many more tagged below (I'm hard at work here, too)pic.twitter.com/nsNY0jXG6k

6th, it means changing the terms of the conversation. We all want to follow outrage. That hasn't gotten us anywhere. Let's do what WORKS. Limiting access to ppl w/history of
#domesticviolence. Physician screening/ interventions. Safe storage. Simple policies. Partnerships.pic.twitter.com/23kMSW3hCv

Here's the god awful truth: we have more guns, per person, than almost any other country in the world. We also have horrible inequalities & anger. Most guns are not used to hurt people. But some are. It's time that we own up to, & fix, ALL OF IT. There's simply no other way.

This is not about "crime". Nor is it about "mental health". Nor, honestly, is it about lawful gun owners - they are not the problem, either. It's about stemming the tide of destruction that our messed-up approach to this issue has wrought.pic.twitter.com/BdLju1S3cd

Today,
@JudiciaryDems will take up this issue. I hope they do so from a health lens. Where we focus on changing outcomes. It's time.#EnoughShow this thread -
