my contribution to the oral history is that on my first day as an intern in 2013 told me he wanted to outsource copyediting overseas; 8 months later he pushed us to make public😎 don’t doubt the copy editors!

Today is the last day of BuzzFeed News. I wanted the last word on it to be from the people who worked there. Here's the final post, the Oral History of BuzzFeed News: buzzfeednews.com/article/buzzfe

Just so proud of every single person on this ferocious little team, we punched so far above our weight and became a really invaluable resource for so many writers and editors. I am so lucky that I got to start my career here, and with . FOREVER and EVER.

When we compiled this issue, we did not know it would be our last. Our style guide went live on Feb. 4, 2014, launched by BuzzFeed’s first copy chief, @em_dash3. Her then–deputy copy chief, @meganpaolone, created Quibbles & Bits and sent the first issue in 2016.

Such a momentous loss for the editing and language community; Henry taught so many so much about being better editors, and better humans.

No hyphen for Asian American, African American and other dual-heritage terms. When possible, refer to a person’s country of origin or follow the person’s preference. Such as: Filipino American or Indian American. RIP and thank you, Henry Fuhrmann @latimes. apne.ws/NBSGoYP

THE USE OF SINGULAR “THEY” ACTUALLY DATES BACK TO THE 1300S SO YOU CAN’T MAKE THE ARGUMENT THAT IT “BOTHERS YOU” BECAUSE IT’S “GRAMMATICALLY INCORRECT” EVEN SHAKESPEARE AND EMILY DICKINSON USED “THEY” WITH A SINGULAR ANTECEDENT AND NO ONE SAID A THING

The slashing of BuzzFeed News (again) is devastating, especially after years of assurances it wouldn't happen, that @peretti "values news," that news is "core" to BF's mission. Imagine if he cared as much abt real, tangible impact as he does $$$! A thread of some of that impact:

woke myself up laughing this morning because I had a dream that I met a bunch of aliens who spoke to me in English on a whiteboard like in Arrival and they said... "hey Meg, remember it's Meatless Monday" that's all

every so often it hits me that the weight loss industry is so manipulative and toxic you can survive a global pandemic that killed millions of people and *still* be low key convinced that getting fatter during that time was somehow a bad outcome
