I published a smallish article on a question that has been on my mind for a while: What are the dynamics and wider schools of thought of the design community and how do they interact with each other? Would love to get people's feedback and thoughts!

The new UK government service standard is now live!! This is the first time our government has had a standard for whole services, not just the digital bit. Here are a few of the major changes...

I'm back to blogging after some years. The new piece is a short essay on strategic design that contemplates on research, decision making, design beyond business, systems thinking, futurism, etc. I'd be happy to hear your thoughts!

What I’m reading right now. A fantastic primer in systems thinking. Something every service designer should read. Any suggestions for more gems like this?

I am very humbled to see that 500+ people have now gone through our online course on service blueprinting. It's been an amazing journey developing the method, the course, and connecting with the community. So grateful!

A design process is a series of decisions. Decisions should be informed by evidence. Artifacts, whether design or research artifacts, can support this process, but the decisions and the insights are the important part. Shiny artifacts often provide cover for weak thinking.

Frankly, the best time for me to attend professional events is during the day on a workday. The best location, if not a quick drive from work, is videoconference. We should leverage technology and design better virtual events that allow for personal connection and networking. 3/3

Now that I have two kids, my evenings and weekends are sacred family time (other people watch my kids 45hrs a week) and I don't see them. So 6pm meetups in the city for "drinks" are impossible, and weekends and just a choice I have to make: see my kids or see this conference. 2/3

So, as an anecdote, with my first child, I attended a conference and they let me pump in the T-shirt supply room. But there was no lock and no communication to the event staff. People would just walk in on me with no warning. 1/3

As a design leader with 2 small children (4 & <1), I experience regular frustration engaging in the design community. Events are not planned considering remote participation or family-accomodating schedules. Being a mom disadvantages me in my field. Organizers, please consider.
