Journalism is one of the jobs that credentials like an elite profession but pays like a trade. We justify the gap by saying it's a calling. But in reality, the whole thing should be re-thought.

I could write 15 columns on how shitty this all is. But really the takeaway needs to be that we can only upend this trend if we let ourselves be just OK and stand around to help each other. The lack of safety net is what keeps the pipeline from being cyclical.
