One hidden reason why games industry has a huge crunch culture is simple. At some point, you're going to throw away a huge chunk of your game, and you have no idea what that will be or how significant it's going to be. 1/thread

Good thread. Also explains why old Blizzard and Nintendo rarely give release dates until the game is practically done. Warcraft 3 I think had 3 full rewrites with no launch dates for almost 6 years. Then it became one of the most popular games of the decade due to the time spent.

Yes but Blizzard has access to a war chest of cash and good will no one else has.

... and if we are staying on topic... None of that saves Blizzard from crunch. Last time I interviewed there, the two engineers who started my day off with me had literally just woken up from sleeping in the office. And laughed about it. Tbf, this is some years ago.

I was referring to "old blizzard" as in pre-activision blizzard. like pre Warcraft 3 days. Where they wouldn't even give out dates for games similar to what Nintendo does now. Current Blizzard definitely seems to do this like you've confirmed.

Blizzard has always crunched. Heres a comment about crunching for Starcraft .:.https://www.pcgamesn.com/starcraft/starcraft-crunch …

It's heartbreaking to know this stuff happens.

I’m of mixed feelings. In this case, a year or two of brutal overwork made me rich and gave me a reputation I still trade on 20 years later.

Of course, it can have a positive outcomes in some cases, but even at those I can't but say to myself, is there really not a better way? Reading the thread makes it seems like it's impossible sometimes, maybe is naive to think that way, but either way...

To me the problem isn’t so much a small group knowingly busting their ass to create something they love, it’s when it becomes a business proposition where executives and stockholders are getting rich off the efforts.

That's what it seems, like most artistic products like some animation or videogames are that way, but it's hard to swallow until you're told from someone inside. Thank you, too, for your answers and contributing to the thread. I saw a few of them. Like doesn't feel enough.
