Many Leninist states are more “democratic” than the United States (not China though), but I don’t recognize either as a fully legitimate form of democracy. They have de facto ruling classes. I’m strongly supportive of a free press, strongly opposed to banks & the housing market.
“Why couldn't Venezuela do the same?” Because they never had almost a trillion dollars in a North Sea oil sovereign fund? What do you mean? You realize that Norway is no less “socialist” than Venezuela, right? (And that most Venezuelans aren’t starving?)

Norway has only 70% private employment, and some of that is in market-socialist cooperatives.
