I have come across a series of interpretations of famous figures as they would look today. Here’s Julius Caesar looking like he enjoys a flat white and works as a senior manager in Google

Probably the earliest extant Hummus recipe dating back to 14th century AD in cookbook written in Cairo: a cold purée of chickpeas with vinegar and pickled lemons with herbs, spices, and oil

McInnes is a racist organiser and founder of the fascist Proud Boys. He has previously hosted Jared Taylor on his show. Taylor is the editor of the white supremacist American Renaissance site (McInnes has also contributed multiple articles to AR) Andrew Neil:

Or, and bear with me, Irish voters in GE2020 are making decisions based mostly on domestic issues and the entire world doesn't revolve around the whims of Britain, despite what their analysts and columnists think. The empire is dead, the colonialist mentality is harder to kill.

Andrew Neil tweets that Varadkar's Fine Gael, campaigning on anti-British "small country" ticket, are down 7 points
Ally Fogg tweets that he must admit that his list of expected-unexpected consequences of Brexit has always been very long, but did not include Sinn Féin winning an Irish election, and ends with "Aye, top bants fellas".

I guess I’m saying-let’s not forget that behaviour in the first overseas colony was characterised by legal exclusion of native Irish, genocide, famine and a constant state of war. It served as a testing ground for all the delights that were later unleashed on the rest of the world

Interesting takes in my TL about how British ppl should learn about the negative aspects of Empire 👍 But Important to say-horrendous behaviour in foreign countries by English admins goes back even further than that. *Medieval + early modern Ireland look to camera*

Glad you like it. A poem to lift the heart, local but somehow wonderfully universal. For the day that’s in it, thanks to twitter, Michael Healy’s work in is a good way to say happy Saint Brigid’s day!

No, she wasn’t. She’s more complex than that. She represents the best of us, she takes care of the sick and poor, loves animals and kicks arse with magic when needed. Enjoy her day and the start of spring. The long, dark nights have ended and the light returns

Brigid was the greatest female saint of Ireland and was honoured and had stories made up about her for the last 1500 years. Was there a real woman behind all this? Maybe, or perhaps the saint is a composite figure? Was she also a Christian takeover of a pagan ancient goddess? >

She used what we would call magic. Words of power whispered to make a woman love a man and an unwanted foetus right disappear...and she wasn’t the only one doing that. Early medieval Irish saints were up to all sorts >

There’s a story that she met him and solved a problem for him. A woman claimed that Patrick’s assistant Bron was the father of her child (wasn’t true apparently) so Brigid’s power meant the woman’s tongue swelled up when she repeated the lie Job. Done. >

Her convent was established at Kildare (Cill Dara - the church of the oak tree) in the 5thC. So she’s a very, very early saint and v v prestigious. Her later followers tried to claim ascendancy for her over all Ireland but were beaten to it by followers of Patrick >

She was good at the old miracles was Brigid. She changed water into ale, restored sight, tamed wild animals and liked to hang her clothes on sunbeams. When she slept it looked like her house was on fire-this chimes with claims that her convent kept a perpetually burning fire >

Brigid got about. One folktale held that when Mary and the child Jesus were fleeing to Egypt they were detained by Roman soldiers. Time travelling Brigid promptly arrived and to distract the soldiers put on a massive headdress with lighted candles and so Mary+Jesus escaped >
