Agile is of course a way to build the wrong thing more quickly, repeatedly

again, for agile as it is currently practiced in a lot of places, that is 100% true. But that's because most of them are doing some weird Certified Scrum/Agile/SAFe nonsense that some consultant sold them and not actually being agile.

yeah and i'm saying there was agile at least 30 years before there was Agile™ (here's niklaus wirth writing in 1971: https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/1d2c/e8f0c129985fcf2dea5cac6823bfcac90938.pdf … )

I think a huge problem with pointing to stuff pre-1990s as "just like what we should do now" is that most products didn't get continuously updated. There were new VERSIONS of products, yes. But constantly updating software on the same codebase is pretty different.

An interesting middle ground was on Win95/XP/IE, which had major release cycles, we did daily builds that we often self-forced to use. Of course it wasn’t the same as today’s live deploys to millions of customers, but it did have a big ++ impact on how engineering was done.

It would be fascinating to look at how things changed from shipping people CD-ROMs in boxes to shipping updates over the internet. And before that from big industrial mainframes to lots of individual PCs. Scott, you read. Who's already written that? Don't make me ask
