I will be voting NO on the Rules package with #PayGo. It is terrible economics. The austerians were wrong about the Great Recession and Great Depression. At some point, politicians need to learn from mistakes and read economic history. @paulkrugman @StephanieKelton @RBReichhttps://twitter.com/GunnelsWarren/status/1080318713331617792 …

I thought it willfully shackled us to not making us go bankrupt. Also, can’t they waive it in any case they deem neccessary? That’s how I read it.
-
Margi, the theory behind why PayGo is bad is that 1) the government can't go bankrupt, since it issues the currency, and 2) Republicans ignore debt/deficit spending anyway, so PayGo just means that their priorities get funded and ours don't.
-
Ok I hear your theory but it doesn’t sound like a concrete truth. I’m not saying Paygo is wonderful, I’m saying it’s a red herring or a McGuffin in the so called “more progressive than thou” wing of the incoming DEM freshmen. Let me find that article again to double check.
-
Honestly, it would prevent large parts of the progressive agenda. (The
#GreenNewDeal is nearest to my heart.) I don't think progressives want to exclude anyone or appear "holier than thou." We welcome everyone! -
Green new deal will not happen without DEMS being in charge of all 3 branches. I hope everyone gets that. We’re talking 2022.
-
We only need control of two branches of gov.: the executive and legislative branches, & only for ease. At any rate, good policy can prevail if the vast public is for it. Look what happens when ACA is supported by a majority of the public despite a majority power in opposition.

Guys I’ve muted this conversation from this morning, it’s all been sorted out and I can’t deal with 20 new mentions every hour

But can’t it be waived at any time? Seems more symbolic than anything else.
-
It's all symbolic. Especially right now. Very little that passes the house will even make it to the floor of the Senate anyway. The far-left just wants to assert their TeaParty-like hostage-taking powers from day 1.
-
oh, please. “far” left is ridiculous.

I dont think so. Reducing defict is NOT GOP priority. Never has been. They have tried to smear Dems with wreckless spending image, but not true. GOP spends to line corporate pockets. Dems balance the budget without starving everyone and without letting our infastructure crumble.
-
incoherent and missing the point
-
I agree I missed the paygo point, Im still informing myself. Your lack of comprehension doesn’t make my tweet incoherent however.

Exactly. Maybe if the democrats actually had priorities other than giving everybody free everything they could get some stuff done too.

If PayGo passes, it gives Dems a rationale to re-examine the tax cuts, & shift funds from programs w/ excess funds--like DHS, to programs Dems favor. If we don't get the deficit under control, Dems won't get ANY programs they want & House newcomers will be replaced in 2020.

Why is it bad in terms of economics though?
