Modern education is way more about making people good worker bees than it is about producing the next set of innovators. Imagine what we could accomplish by reinventing our current system of education?

Questioning the work we do is woven into the historical fabric of the tech industry. When I was part of a group called Computer People for Peace w/in the Antiwar movement of the 60s-70s, our initial focus was on opposing military work.” —⁦Joan Greenbaum

For the price of this single $13 billion warship—a total boondoggle—we could provide America's children universal school lunches for a full year. This is why we must confront the military-industrial complex and end the profiteering off of weapons of war.

We live in the richest country on earth. School lunch debt should not exist.  Student loan debt should not exist. Medical debt should not exist.

Even NYPD officers are talking to reporters about the foreseeable issues with Clearview: "It only takes one cop to put in his ex-girlfriend’s photo in there and see who she’s dating now...They’re playing with fire. It’s going to catch up to them.”

This is a terrible take. It totally misses the key point: handles >10k submissions and >25m downloads per month at a cost of only $1.3m /year. spends $193m (!) on publications, and spends $33.7m. Something stinks.

I am so weary of people popping up and saying "but my society" every time people push to get rid of journal paywalls. The goal of scholarly communication is to communicate science and further its progress - not to provide a large pool of money to scientific societies.

White men carrying assault rifles to the VA state capital. Must’ve traded in the tiki torches this time around. This ain’t about gun rights, it’s about white supremacy, intimidation, and keep Blacks and other nin whites “in their place.”

Tamir Rice, was a 12 y/o black boy carrying a TOY GUN was percieved as a BLACK MAN carrying a GUN in an OPEN CARRY STATE of OHIO. He was SHOT & KILLED by police. Don't tell me it wouldn't be different if this was a group of Muslim, Latino, or Black Men!

More fodder for this paper I'm writing about the affective circulation of cute ring videos as normalizing our surveillance culture. They're not just making free advertising for Amazon, they're making free advertising for a surveillance state.

Thread from "Do Artifacts Have Politics?" (Langdon Winner, 1980), on whether technologies can be judged not only for efficiency, productivity, & environmental impact, but also for the ways in which they can embody specific forms of power & authority

In controversies about technology and society, there is no idea more pro
vocative than the notion that technical things have political qualities. At issue is
the claim that the machines, structures, and systems of modern material culture
can be accurately judged not only for their contributions of efficiency and pro
ductivity, not merely for their positive and negative environmental side effects,
but also for the way
