My latest : A new book reveals the covert network of Black teachers who gave rise to the school-desegregation movement—and in the aftermath of Brown v. Board, watched their vision of integration unravel.

“small actions send subtle yet powerful messages. Parents may not even be aware that they are conveying ideas about race...but children learn from them all the time...when it comes to communicating w/ white children about racism, parents’ actions often speak louder than...words.”

The piece notes all the ways your words just don’t stack up to your actions: Do you lock your car doors when you drive thru Black neighborhood? Who do you invite to dinner, to summer cookouts? Who are your friends? What TV shows do you watch? What books/magazines do you own? etc.

Thiiiiiiiiiiiis. Why White Parents Need to Do More Than Talk to Their Kids About Racism This piece strikes so many chords. Y’all blog on talking to your white kids about race/racism and live in all-white communities. And I’m sitting here like: 🤔🤫😐

  5. Student: What’s you goal? : “I want one day for people to talk about New York City public schools, and never ever mention that they’re segregated.” “That’s my goal in the future.”

I’d love for a journalist to find and interview some of the Black students Kavanaugh’s mother taught. White women teachers are notable for their white savior syndrome. I’d like some receipts on her teaching from those she taught if he’s going to trot her out re his racial cred.

I haven’t been following this. On a late lunch break. Has Kavanaugh brought up his mother again during confirmation hearings? He previously tried to claim his mom taught him about equality bc she taught at two Black high schools in D.C. Wish intrepid edwriter would fact-check.

To be frank, Supreme Court nominee calling decision upholding racial segregation “wrong” and Brown v. Board “greatest moment in SCOTUS history” is pretty damn basic. I want to hear his views on Shelby Cty v. Holder—rather than him opining on segregated Black schools.

Andrew Jackson is on the 20 dollar bill and he's not even a particularly revered former President. There will be elementary schools named after Trump in 50 years because America SUCKS at holding racists accountable. Whether dead or alive, it's never the "right time" to do so.

When people say "history will not be kind" re: all of these white supremacist Republicans, I kind of think they don't know...well, history. American history as we're taught it routinely rehabilitates/repackages the legacies of white racists and turns them into heroes.

Just thinking about all the amazing people from Black & Brown history who deserve buildings and roads and towns named after them!

Why Are Black People Still Punished for Their Hair? Only Black people are shamed when they choose to wear hairstyles consistent with their natural hair texture. “The shaming and regulation of Black people’s hair starts in school...”

I want these people to be this mad when innocent black kids are shot dead by law enforcement. I want them to be this pissed off when this country puts little kids in cages because they came from another country. Don’t use patriotism 2 hide your racism

“True reconciliation can occur only when we honestly acknowledge our painful, but shared past.” We romanticize racial reconciliation, like everyone hugs it out and you forget white girl terrorizing you in your youth as you walked into school. This is full story of integration.

Eliz. Eckford struggled with depression and trauma throughout her adult life from trying to integrate Central H.S. Then AP photojournalist arranged for Eckford and Bryan to meet face-to-face. Forty years after Bryan screamed at Eckford, they reconciled. Or so it was reported. ...

You can see Elizabeth Eckford is surrounded by white girls and women — they yelled obscenities and racist slurs at her. As Eckford passed and headed toward the school, clutching a folder and pushing forward, Hazel Bryan screamed at her and told her to “go back to Africa.”

Here’s more on the anniversary of this famous photo. Hazel Bryan is the white girl screaming at Elizabeth Eckford, one of the Little Rock Nine. On first day of school, a white mob called out for her to be lynched. AP photographer captured this iconic image of white hate and fury.

in 1957, Elizabeth Eckford (pictured) and the Little Rock Nine were unable to enter Little Rock Central High School. Gov. Orval Faubus commanded the Arkansas National Guard to obstruct their entries.

"Decolonize" does not mean hire one Indigenous person who you expect to single-handedly make your organization less racist while simultaneously expecting them to make white folk as comfortable as possible with superficial changes.
