The first ManyBabies project, "Quantifying sources of variability in infancy research using the infant-directed speech preference," has been accepted at AMPPS! This 67 lab (!) paper shows the power of collaboration to advance methods and theory!

Summary: A really thought-provoking theory piece that I'd recommend for anyone interested in big questions about cognitive development. Made for a great lab meeting discussion.

And for me maybe most crucially, how does this theory come in contact with the gradual improvements we see in children's behavior in almost every part of their behavior?

Second: I worry that this story doesn't have enough developmental mechanism. What are the data that children are learning from? What does that learning look like? Is it evidence accumulation until the right theory wins, or are there other dynamics?

I like this general synthesis but I have two big worries. First, I wonder if there is too much emphasis put on language being the necessary glue. I tend to think there are many ways to reason, language being a particularly effective one. Example here:

In a nutshell: 1) babies have proto-conceptual representations (e.g., number, object, cause) 2) linguistic symbols get mapped onto these 3) symbols allow older kids to construct explicit intuitive theories of these domains.

In lab today we read Fei Xu (2019), Psych Review, "Towards a rational constructivist theory of cognitive development." This is an ambitious theoretical paper that tries to synthesize core knowledge with Bayesian modeling and the "theory theory."

Quick question: I recall that someone coded papers in the Open Science Collaboration 2015 dataset for whether the basic finding was within- vs between-subjects but can’t find this. Anyone know whether this coding is out there?

Thoughtful article that is nevertheless unlikely to convince anyone to use Bayesian methods - based on this, being a Bayesian sounds like a daunting project of navigating a space with little consensus and lots of hard conceptual problems...

Exciting example of the emergentist perspective in the domain of number. Most interesting part: an account of developmental refinement of number sense acuity from experience - this is empirically true but very undertheorized in nativist accounts.
