My kid was doing this pose and I said she should do it next time she is proud of something she does. I promised her I would too. Time to own our hard-won achievements.

  3. A document like this for PhD students you advise seems like a REALLY helpful way of unhiding the hidden curriculum of grad school. Kind for everyone, essential if you want students who are or who come from a diverse set of backgrounds to succeed.

I can’t really begin to articulate how good an answer this is. How unthinkably good.

To add to this: Nonacademic jobs do ‘t need to be a fallback (although if they are, that’s okay too). You can choose it before putting yourself through the misery of the academic market. (I did.) Perhaps a coordinated group of us polsci nonac phds could help depts with this?

this Mitt Romney vote reminds me of how I feel whenever I see a dad toting around a baby — I‘m a little embarrassed that I’m so excited to see someone do something that should just be standard! and yet somehow it isn’t, so

Redlining, economics, and food deserts: a thread. Did you realize that food deserts can often be directly traced on to red-lining maps (maps that formalized racial divisions within cities)?

I don't think the paper ripping was unplanned. I think it was aimed at focusing attention on it rather than what she knew would be countless SOTU lies from the president. I wish we lived in a different political universe than we do, but I'm not sure that was a bad move.

Heading back to the intro of the piece I'm working on today to see if I can add some of this level of inspiration.

“The image tweeted by Pompeo is from a Simpsons episode titled "Mr. Lisa Goes to Washington," in which Lisa tears up her prize-winning essay about American values after witnessing a corrupt congressman accepting a bribe, shattering her faith in democracy.”

Oh ffs. We have "results" at 62% reported. They're complicated enough that the WaPo and NYT are reporting different "winners." This is all ridiculous and I really would like to switch to the timeline where democracy is functioning properly.

How bad is the academic job market? This bad. Thrilled for (who thankfully found a very well-deserved job) but it's just brutal out there. He has 8 articles! His record is tenurable in many departments already!
