A vast majority of the legwork was done and it took much longer than a day! This paper is a systematic review, so we spent months meeting once a week to eat queso, drink beer, and code articles But momentum had slowed down, and we didn't want that effort to go to waste!

We all worked on the same document in Google Docs simultaneously using Paperpile Its add-on for Google Docs is free and makes it super easy to write/cite in parallel rather than having to bounce drafts back and forth

Two people on our team (me included) are pretty proficient with R, so could adapt previous code relatively quickly We could also check behind each other to ensure the results were reproducible/weren't ludicrous
Show this thread -
We used a group ToDoist to assign incremental tasks among ourselves, and we could update the list/assignments in real-time We also all sat right next to each other so we could check in anytime there was any confusion

One team member wasn't super familiar with the literature, so I zipped up a Zotero folder into a .csv and sent her all the potentially relevant articles along with my notes (Continuously taking some notes as I put articles in my Zotero libraries is my secret super power)
Show this thread -
To do the above, just right-click on any of your Zotero libraries, click "Export Collection" and then select "CSV" as the "Format" while making sure to check the box that says "Export Notes"

Using these resources, she was able to get a handle on key papers, outline the Intro, get feedback from me, and complete a complete draft of the Intro within several hours

The Google doc also increased accountability for all of us to start and keep writing! Much easier to stay on track when you can literally see someone else making progress if you scroll down a page

I'm sure there are ways we could improve this process in the future, but I really liked it! Focusing the efforts of several people onto one big task in the short-term seems better than making fractured efforts over longer periods of time

Thanks to
@MalloryDobias and Alyssa Maron for making this happen! Excited to finish up the Discussion in our next mini-session soonShow this thread

You just raised the bar. I’m going to give this a shot.

If you (or anyone else reading this) want any resources just let me know! All for trying to supercharge everyone's ability to do good work

Question to everyone: what do you use to organize lab discussions online? I pay for slack out of pocket and found it to be amazing. Now people can open the app and know there are no distractions as it’s all lab nothing else. But someone showed me asana yesterday which is tight.
-
I've used Slack across a few different labs, but unless there are strong group norms of how to use it I think it ends up being not that different from e-mail I like ToDoist for splitting up tasks on a specific projecthttp://todoist.com
-
We just use a Google chat. I asked my students about slack, but for whatever reason, no one seemed to prefer it.
-
You’re lucky. Your students are saving you about $60 per month that I’m paying. But the sleekness is so worth it.

This is insane. nice work all involved but my mind is blown

I'm super proud of our (at least slightly crazy) team! And we were all beat by the end, but in the good workout kind of way I don't know how long-term sustainable taking this approach is, especially given that with other responsibilities we had to do this on a Sunday
-
That's awesome! That's how it always is for us - beat by the end, but super productive and a great bonding experience. Once a year is enough for us. :) Even though I threaten my grads with amping up the frequency.. They all know they're my boss, anyway.
-
I'm so glad this worked out so well for you! I agree that it's a really useful and efficient way to write, and TBH, I kinda wish every paper could be like this. Though maybe talk to me again after I've actually spearheaded one....pic.twitter.com/7qQpt8LqI6
