After 9 years, I'm leaving Google. My last day will be in a few weeks. My main reason for leaving is Google leadership's poor handling of crises over the last year: particularly their failure to make any significant changes in response to the demands. [1/6]

I love Super Bowl statistics. (“No team that has failed to convert at least 35% of their 3rd downs has gone on to win” etc.) They are the best introduction to p-hacking that can be found outside major journals.

the bishop of orlando is also the bishop of the moon, due to a canon law that says "any newly discovered territory would fall under the bishopric from whence the discovering expedition departed". his is therefore the largest catholic diocese, at over 14,000,000 square miles

It's fun when you put it all together that John Kerry is the only dem Prez candidate to lose the popular vote in the last 30 years. Like, is 31, right? That means in her whole life every Dem candidate won the popular vote except Kerry.

I decided that this year, every day, I would knit a row on a scarf to mark the corresponding daily temperature/weather of my town. It felt like a good way to engage with the changing climate and with the changing year. A way to notice and not look away. Here's January then.

i looked him up just now, and it turns out he passed away two years ago, aged 72. thanks John, for taking a risk on me and helping put me through college. and massive apologies to whoever — if anyone — had to maintain that codebase after i touched it...

the guy who hired me took a risk on hiring an inexperienced high school student to take over the existing Perl (!) codebase, and throughout college i was very thankful for the $100/month retainer that he paid me to fix the occasional small problem. that helped pay for books!

this made me think of the first programming project i ever got paid for, in the late 90s — a website that took <FORM> input from a user & sent a fax (!) to local car dealers
