Announcing a big move! I'm moving to the Netherlands, to become Associate Professor of AI & Biodiversity at & . I'm really excited to build something new with AI & biodiversity as the heart of it, and to work at TWO great places. Plus... the Netherlands!

Who out there is using DVC (Data Version Control) to keep track of machine learning experiments? Looks handy.

Great job opportunity to work as a data scientist at the brand new Octopus Centre for Net-zero. One of the main projects will be building a data-driven simulation of the energy system, using a modern software stack. Applications close on 24 Jan:

A nice map of how the number 99 is expressed in Europe's languages, not least as it highlights how, er, unique Danish is ("ni og halvfems" literally translates as "nine and half-fives")

Yo deep learning / machine vision researchers, think object detection is basically solved? Try this one: train against our dataset of UK solar panels, then detect all these Indian solar panels as they pop up. Anyone reckon they can do it? /cc

A very nice article about feedback loops in music recommendation. My two main take home messages: (1) "if you want to diversify your listening, you’ll have to put more effort into music discovery rather than allowing the system to do it for you" 1/2

"I've made a living out of making meals from thin air and hope - but you can't, you literally can't" has expressed their outrage at the food parcels which have been sent to families as part of the free school meals scheme. |

The Chartwells/Compass free school meals package scandal is a teachable moment about capitalism. 1/ Why do so many families need free school meals? Because real wages have stagnated while profits soared...

Making noise WORKS. Schools seem to be able to opt out of the boxes and I’ve heard from quite a few this morning already who are GOING BACK TO THE VOUCHERS. Sometimes this hellsite can be used for good, so please keep exposing the corruption of the Free School Meals ‘hampers’.

The real cost must be far higher than this. So it's both a moronic line by the TPA, and obviously wrong. One of the most destructive forces in Britain. Actually makes me patriotically angry how much they damage our country.

I've received several DMs from friends asking what do to about parents/family members who believe misinformation regarding the election, vaccines and COVID. Here's a research-based thread to help explain the roots of these beliefs and how to (and how *not* to) address them. 1/
