McKay Coppins Retweeted Ryan Burge  📊

It's hard to overstate how strange it is that an incumbent Republican president could win just over half of the Latter-day Saint vote. This was—quite recently!— the most overwhelmingly Republican religious group in Americahttps://twitter.com/ryanburge/status/1306279651623534592 …

    McKay Coppins added,

    Ryan Burge  📊 @ryanburge
In 2008, 72% of LDS voted for McCain. In 2012, 82% of LDS voted for Romney. In 2016, 51% of LDS voted for Trump. In June of 2020, 55% of LDS intended to vote for Trump. Oh, and Biden was doing 5 points better with white evangelicals than Clinton did in 2016. pic.twitter.com/sy2nLuHnUj

Lots of people will obviously say Trump's numbers with Mormon voters should be much worse, given... you know, everything. But to me, the 20ish-point swing away from the Republican presidential nominee is much more notable.

The church has to make a public statement at some point. This is like African Americans in the church all over again by being active fence sitters. It’s appalling frankly.

The church (or any church that cares about its tax exempt status) is not going to make an explicit statement about partisan politics

LDS, unlike white evangelicals, are mostly staying true to their beliefs and moral standards instead of compromising them. LDS history would also make people naturally skeptical of Trump’s xenophobic rhetoric.

Yeah, Mormons are pretty cosmopolitan, at least the handful I know, because of the overseas trips

It's more astonishing that 45*'s support in this group has gone up despite 4 years of lies, cowardice, and corruption.

Any thoughts on the uptick for Trump since 2016, especially in light of an unquestionably religious man in Biden being the nominee?
