Now that I've read the article I have... thoughts.https://www.racked.com/2018/4/28/17290256/incel-chad-stacy-becky …

Something I used to do back in the church, when I saw/heard something egregiously ridiculous, was try to find answers to the questions: "where would somebody GET an idea like that?" "why would somebody BELIEVE an idea like that?"

But when I see this meme, I know exactly where a person would get an idea like that: from practically every teen fiction that ever existed.

(Although I'm still a little confused about why you would identify things like boobs or blond hair as "natural" on a caricature of a woman who is clearly not supposed to be natural in any way, but whatever)

The idea that there are these super-hot women who just sail through life getting everything handed to them by horny dudes, while the rest of us work at Starbucks, is a really common story template, often told from the point of view of the regular woman.

And it sets up this idea that regular women should be GRATEFUL for any kind of dude attention at all, even from jerks. Like, "oh, he noticed me after all, he must be very special, not shallow like those other dudes!"

Which, now that I think about it, is an attitude that I used to get sometimes from dudes at cons or whatever who were trying to pick me up.

Like, they would phrase things where the obvious implication was that they were really special for even noticing my somewhat non-conventional hotness and I was supposed to melt or something.

I feel like these "incel" guys have taken that same attitude a million times more toxic, by not only believing we should be grateful for their attention, but also, should be VICIOUSLY PUNISHED for NOT being grateful.

And the fabulously hot women should also be VICIOUSLY PUNISHED for "using" that hotness to get stuff from horny dudes, as well as for sleeping with guys who are handsome or rich or otherwise seen as top dog.

In fact, in their view, all women should be viciously punished basically for existing, which is why I place the blame for the creation of murderous misogynists STRAIGHT on the religious right/Christian patriarchy movement.

The explicitly religious misogynists use a vaguely Biblical sexual purity story framework to argue for the eternal punishment of women. But these ostensibly secular "incel" dudes are using a story they got from things like John Hughes movies.

The #MeToo movement is revealing just how many of the men involved in creating those stories are, themselves, toxic and abusive misogynists, dudes who have ISSUES with women.

That a lot of these story templates we carry around in our heads -- because we all get stuff from the movies, let's be real -- are, deep down in their bones, toxic and misogynistic and sexist as hell.

We need to start telling better stories.
