Yeah, I used http://goo.gl  quite a bit, assuming it was going to be a reliable long-term service. URL shorteners are pretty trivial, granted, but http://goo.gl  was a pretty good one overall, and the cost to Google was pretty minimal.

But now, oh, they're replacing it with some piece of crap that essentially creates links that direct people not to websites, but to mobile applications. Some people love trapping you in their apps; they get more of your personal information, and they get to spoon feed you.

Me? I don't want sixty *&@#ing apps on my damn phone harvesting data for God knows what. I just want a *&@#ing URL I can fit in 20–30 characters so I can see it in the browser of my choice.

And if someone sends me a "firebase" URL or whatever the hell it looks like, and it pushes me to install an app every time, I'm just gonna start throwing them away. You think we have problems with Russian propaganda NOW? Just wait: they'll have an app for that—HUNDREDS of 'em.

What's worse, I worry that Google will whimsically shut down other useful services I actually depend on. Like Google Domains. I don't really want to switch my domain service *again*.

Google has already pranged so many things—and mystifyingly at that. Even their source projects have been made a hash of ("depot tools" is about as unprofessional a pile of crap I've seen, just as an example).

I've always felt that an implicit part of "don't be evil" is "have some consideration for others," as well as "practice competence." http://goo.gl  could be maintained at minimal cost (assuming they programmed it competently) rather than this app-railroading alternative.

Whatever the case, it's dismaying. Sure, there are alternative URL-shortening services, and you can claim that I'm just whining about this, but the long-term usefulness of a company to *me* involves a sense that I can rely on them not to play capricious games with their services.

And the more they pointlessly dismantle useful services in favor of dodgy ones, the less seriously I take their "Don't be evil" schtick, and the less I want to rely on them for anything. It's not like they provided competent customer support, after all.

Of course, if you're running a competent, professional, stable service, you don't need a big customer-support department. And while Google *used* to have contact links, damned if I can find them anymore.

Anyway, I've been thinking a lot about long-term alternatives. Maybe it's gonna have to be up to organizations like the @linuxfoundation or @fsf to help develop some of those—like inexpensive, reliable domain registration and whatnot. And a good URL shortening service.

I don't know what the answers are, really, but I fear it's gonna wind up having to be up to the geek community rather than private enterprise. Which . . . ugh, frustrating.
