Doing your own research is like doing your own plumbing. It works better if you are a plumber

There is a reason people talk about research skills. Research requires skills. Specific kinds of research very often require specific skills and knowledge. All these can be taught. But they do need to be learned.

As a side note, it's funny that this is something scientists readily accept of their own areas of expertise but sometimes forget or even deny when it comes to the work of people in non-STEM fields. But schadenfreude isn't really an option when people are dying.

A terrible book about the Enlightenment is less likely to hospitalize someone than a horse-sized dose of dewormer. But some of the same causes lie behind both.

But you can learn, aren't you? You can learn how to fix pipes, and you could fall in love with this trade and become the best plumber ever. Or, you can hurt yourself and learn how to call a plumber. In both cases, you learn something and it is a good thing.
