Yes. Scruton sounds like an ignorant person's idea of a knowledgeable person. He is compelling initially, but left with more questions than answers if you read him with a critical eye. I much preferred Paul Kennedy's conception of Western civilization. CC

I see your point, but it seems Scruton was referring to intra-religious conflict more so than intra-national conflict. Of course, not all conflict in the Middle East is religious in nature, but it far outweighs the type of conflicts in modern day western civilization.

Idk, but I doubt Scruton would think “specifically religious conflict has declined in the West since religion has declined” was an interesting point. But either way, it neither explains nor justifies the separate, special “equilibrium” that he says distinguishes West from Rest.
