I hereby ask that anyone reading my earlier thread substitute the word "fraud" for hoax, as it is more appropriate. (Though I think Archie Carter was indeed a hoaxer, as, unlike the Grievance Studies gang, he never claimed that his fraud was also a real "study" -- just a prank.) https://twitter.com/ConceptualJames/status/1170338170682187776 …

On a more serious note, it's doesn't say much for you if your only substantive response to being caught repeatedly publishing people with fake credentials is to reach for Webster's and quibble.

It says even less if your response is: "OK, but how do we know that fraud is actually 'bad', anyway?" https://twitter.com/adamckolasinski/status/1170341631813402624 …

Again, Glynn's Areo pieces included arguments about academia. So yes, the fake academic degrees were relevant there. His credentials were explicitly invoked by Quillette. So they were relevant there, too. You want "fraud is OK until proven otherwise" to be the hill you die on?

I mean, if Quillette and Areo and the rest of the IDW rag drawer want to make their editorial position: "we publish random shit from cranks, you get what you get," then fine. But it's going to make the "we are the last bastion of Science, rigour, and truth" line harder to sell.

Well, not to their target audience, who they’re sure can’t tell the difference. They don’t think much of their readers.
