If you use a website as a container for some kind of audiovisual work, you are outside what Google treats as a valid, anticipatable use of web tech. Google is designing for a web consisting entirely of "articles" which are shared on one of three social networking websites

Ok can you explain this, bc I've seen this take a few times and idgi. Doesn't it suffice to add a "play" button? Afaict, you just need the user to interact with the tab in some way to get video / audio permission back?
-
Two things. One, please see my site: http://dryad.technology In this case, "Play" is a matter of opening a page. I store the javascript apps on different pages because that's for many reasons more convenient. You click on a link on the front page, or on the card on Twitter.

Can you explain (or point to an explainer) for how it breaks games? Seriously interested.
-
According to the documentation, Audio is blocked unless you perform very specific actions which the standard does not require. You have to wait until you get a user interaction event callback, then unsuspend your audio context. (That's if you're using WebAudio...)

I'd rather have videos not autoplay than have those other sites "work".
-
Chrome apparently feels the same way. So goodbye web-hosted video games, I guess.

It'd be nice if browsers added opt-in permissions for autoplay kinda like what they have for getUserMedia
-
Yep, it's arrogant of them not to let end users decide which sites need audio and which are annoying. Crowd source this stuff.
