I would love to know why that's the base assumption because I totally thought that way about these systems too before all this social media stuff got big and it became obviously and demonstrably wrong.

One response I got to this tweet proposed an answer: They know and don't care. The system works 98% of the time and they don't care if the other 2% ruins people's social lives or promulgates racism or whatever
