If a restaurant's meat supplier or vegetable supplier or linen supplier were providing sub-par service, they'd address it immediately or go out of business. Not sure why web site designers should get a free pass.

I think it's usually the second one. Just because they know how to make good food doesn't mean they know anything about graphic design, and they might not have enough money to hire someone who does.

It's less about food vs design as it is running a business that is all about hospitality and failing at that.
