it sounds like you've been on crappy teams that didn't really know how to use it for its strengths. File sharing? that's for email. Story planning, workflow are way easier, as is team-building when you're not all in the same place. Don't discount the power of a well-used emoji.
i don't know what to tell you except that i've had the exact opposite experience. it's not about the illusion of being in the loop, it's about ~actually being transparent~. and people have to learn to communicate using nuance in every other job!
i keep it open, all the time, on one screen. If I need to know of someone in X department is aware of Thing That Just Happened, I can look, easily, without bothering someone with a DM or an email that they'll never bother to reply to.
