a tyrannical micromanager is going to find a way to be that no matter what tools he (always a he) has available. A team can, however, be remade in a model of transparency and collegiality much more easily when using slack instead of email.
it sounds like you've been on crappy teams that didn't really know how to use it for its strengths. File sharing? that's for email. Story planning, workflow are way easier, as is team-building when you're not all in the same place. Don't discount the power of a well-used emoji.
