After Ballard found the Titanic, it didn't take long for others to as well, secret Navy mission be damned. https://www.nytimes.com/1985/09/08/us/titanic-wreck-was-surrise-yield-of-underwater-tests-for-military.html …pic.twitter.com/wxfHohpzMt

Ballard is giddy to be getting a look at the Titanic. On that trip, they were to leave a plaque from the Explorers Club of New York. It urged "any who may come hereafter leave undisturbed this ship and her contents as a memorial to deep-water exploration." https://www.nytimes.com/1986/07/16/us/undersea-robot-gets-a-look-inside-still-luxurious-titanic.html …pic.twitter.com/TI0SC4KRdg

(fast forward a few years and Alvin, the submersible that's helping Ballard and others visit Titanic is on display at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. 8-year-old Erin is obsessed with it on multiple visits.)

I love this one, when Ballad and crew — who are not generally interested in loot but are also human beings — find a safe in the Titanic wreckage https://www.nytimes.com/1986/07/19/us/expedition-finds-safes-in-wreckage-of-titanic.html …pic.twitter.com/oBBhbxYg2j

skipping ahead a few decades, I've found this obituary of one of the scientists on Ballard's Titanic-discovery team (incredible headline her.) https://www.nytimes.com/2000/05/09/us/ruth-d-turner-85-expert-on-the-wood-eating-mollusk.html …pic.twitter.com/zmkFAYw7yz

annnnnyway back to the Titanic. In 1987, two years after the discovery, The Times was displeased at plans to raid the watery grave. "A Texas oilman in cahoots with a French Government research institute plans a return to the Titanic for treasure and live TV."pic.twitter.com/2dsQjz4vUf

'On July 27, the French brought up dinner plates and wine bottles from the wreck. The next week, the United States Senate voted to ban the sale for profit of anything from the Titanic.' That is some quick work for the Senate.https://www.nytimes.com/1987/08/14/us/french-will-raise-titanic-strongbox.html …

VERY LITTLE to do with the Titanic but wow this story about SeaQuest DSV as NBC's silver bullet to take on Murder, She Wrote's monster ratings. https://www.nytimes.com/1993/10/09/arts/review-television-nbc-and-abc-take-on-cbs-and-lansbury.html …pic.twitter.com/hv0HDTYnWR

(actually a little something to do with the Titanic because 12-year-old me came to know and obsess over Bob Ballard because of the SeaQuest end credits. "Hi, I'm Bob Ballard of the Woods-Hole Oceanographic Institute.")

i'm meandering off this rabbit hole now, but i'll just close by saying some of the most fun you can have on the internet is going to the https://timesmachine.nytimes.com  and typing random key words and seeing where it takes you.
