Good, multifaceted examination of the news. I think part of it is audience participation too. If a particular story gets a lot of hits then more news gets done on it and this results in more hits. Which is when a story takes off and gets covered "everywhere".

And come to think of it a certain orange person sucks all the oxygen out of that cycle making it harder for other important stories to gain proper attention.
