Penn Station is bizarrely not crowded and I keep checking the date to make sure it's Friday and I'm supposed to be here today

Having done a round-the-USA train trip, I can state with confidence that this problem isn't so much an Amtrak problem as it is a problem that's about 95% unique to Penn Station.
It's the same process at nearly every station on the northeast coast.

To be fair, they do the same thing for British rail, in my experience. I think perhaps I was just particularly traumatized by trying to navigate Penn. That station feels like a set from the movie Brazil.

And most other American stations pretty much have set platforms for specific routes, so you already know where to wait.
